중국 당국 개입해 강경 진압시...사태 겉잡을 수 없게돼
[이슈밸리=권동혁 기자] 홍콩 시위로 인해 중국 당국의 무력 진압을 할 것이란 불안한 관측이 나오고 있는 가운데 전날 시위대의 점거 농성으로 모든 항공편 운항을 중단했던 홍콩 국제공항이 13일 정상 재개됐다.
AFP통신에 따르면 공항 대변인은 "체크인 수속을 재개했다"며 곧 항공편 이착륙도 시작한다고 밝혔다. 신문은 이날 오전 시위대가 공항 곳곳에 붙였던 포스터와 플래카드 등도 치워졌다고 전했다.
또 입국장에서 항공편의 비행 상태를 알려주는 알람판에는 '곧 탑승'이라고 쓰인 여러 편의 항공편과 함께 새로운 이륙 시간이 표시됐다고 보도했다.
앞서 홍콩 국제공항은 수천명의 시위대로 인해 전날 오후 4시30분쯤 공항을 폐쇄했다. 집회 중 경찰의 빈백건(beanbag gun)에 맞은 한 여성 시위자가 실명 위기에 처하자 이를 규탄하는 시민들이 공항 입국장을 점거하면서다.
이번 공항 농성 시위대를 강제 해산시키기 위한 홍콩 경찰은 아직까지는 사태를 관망하고 있다. 다만 홍콩 사무를 담당하는 홍콩·마카오 판공실은 이번 공항 폐쇄와 관련해 "사실상의 테러"라며 "폭동을 좌시하지 않겠다"는 강경한 입장을 밝혔다.
따라서 언제든지, 경찰이 홍콩 시위대 무력 진압이 가능할 것이란 불안한 관측이 나오고 있다. 경우에 따라선 홍콩 외곽에 배치된 중국 인민해방군도 사태에 가담할 것이란 예상 또한 전망된다.
지난 6월 9일 시작 10주 이상 지속되고 있는 홍콩 시위는 범죄인 인도법(일명 송환법)에 대한 반발에서 시작된 시위는 송환법 철회 이후 진정한 보통선거 실시, 캐리 람 홍콩 행정장관 사퇴 요구 등으로 확대됐다.
아직까지는 중국 정부가 미국 등 서방진영의 눈치를 보느라 시위 진압을 진행하고 있지는 않지만, 사태가 계속 확산되면 강경 진압도 발생할 수 있을 것이란 관측이 나온다.
Hong Kong's international airport, which had been suspended due to protesters' sit-in the previous day, resumed its normal operations on Wednesday, amid uneasy speculation that the Hong Kong protest might put an end to Chinese authorities' armed crackdown.
According to AFP, an airport spokesman said the check-in procedure had been resumed and that the flight would soon begin taking off and landing. The newspaper said posters and placards that protesters had posted around the airport earlier in the day were also removed.
It also reported that the alarm board, which informs the flight status of the flight at the arrival site, showed a new departure time along with several flights that read "I'm about to board."
Earlier, Hong Kong International Airport shut down the airport around 4:30 p.m. the previous day due to thousands of protesters. The move comes as citizens who denounce a female protester who was hit by police's empty bag during the rally are on the verge of losing her name.
Police in Hong Kong, which is trying to force the protesters to disperse, are still waiting. However, regarding the closure of the airport, the Hong Kong and Macau offices, which are in charge of the Hong Kong office, expressed their strong stance that they would not sit idly by and watch the riot.
Therefore, there is a disturbing prospect that the police will be able to crack down on Hong Kong protesters at any time. In some cases, it is also expected that the Chinese People's Liberation Army will take part in the situation outside Hong Kong.
The protests in Hong Kong, which have lasted more than 10 weeks since June 9, have escalated to a "real normal election" after the extradition law was withdrawn and Hong Kong's administrative minister Carrie Lam's resignation.
Although the Chinese government has not yet been trying to suppress the protests in order to see the U.S. and other Western countries, observers say that if the situation continues to escalate, a hard-line crackdown could occur.
