[이슈밸리=윤대우 편집장] 동네마다 차이가 있겠지만, 우리 동네 목욕탕의 열탕 온도는 40도였던 기억이 난다. 온탕에는 몸 전체를 쉽게 푹 담글 수 있지만, 40도 열탕에 들어갈 때는 발을 먼저 담그고 서서히 적응된 다음에 몸을 담갔다.
기억 속 목욕탕 열탕 온도 40도는 뜨거운 물이다.
그런데 최근 외신은 미국 플로리다 남부 바다의 수온이 40도에 육박하는 38.4도라는 보도를 전했다. 해양 생물이 살 수 있을까? 아니나 다를까 그 아름다운 산호가 서서히 말라 죽고 있다. 문제는 이 지역의 바다 수온이 계속 상승할 가능성이 있다는 점이다.
저 멀리 지상낙원이라 불리는 지중해로 넘어가 보자. 그 선선한 바람과 에메랄드 영롱한 바닷가 주변에 있는 그리스는 몇 주째 산불이 지속하고 있다. 진화 자체가 안 된다고 한다. 나라 전체가 시뻘건 불구덩이가 됐고 하늘은 온통 불지옥을 연상케 한다.
그리스만이 아니다. 인근 이탈리아, 스페인, 포르투갈 지상낙원 모두가 그렇다. 낮 최고 기온이 40도를 오르내리고 있는데 여기에 산불까지 더하니 설상가상, 말 그대로 사람 살 곳이 못 되고 있다.
이는 아시아, 아프리카, 아메리카, 오세아니아에서도 동일하게 발생하고 있다. 몇 달째 이어지진 캐나다 산불피해 면적은 880만㏊(8만8000㎢)로, 한국 면적(10만㎢)의 80%가 넘었다. 이 때문에 캐나다의 올 3분기 경제성장률은 최대 0.6%p 둔화할 것으로 전망된다.
전문가들은 앞으로 이런 일이 인간에게 일상다반사가 될 것이라고 경고한다. 그들은 지구의 온난화 시대는 끝났고 이제 지구 열대화 시대가 됐다고 우려한다.
열대화 시대가 된 가장 큰 이유는 탄소·메탄 배출 1, 2위를 달리는 중국과 미국, 3위 EU, 4위 인도, 5위 러시아가 별다른 액션을 취하지 안고 있기 때문이다. 이들 나라는 자국의 경제 성장과 기업들의 눈치를 보고 있다.
지난 3년간 코로나19로 여행 수요가 급감하면서 항공기 운항 횟수가 줄어들자 지구 온도가 한때 낮아졌는데, 코로나19 비상사태를 종료하자 이들 1~5위 나라의 보복 여행 수요가 폭발하면서 비행기 운행 횟수가 예전보다 급증했다. 한국만 해도 지난해보다 올해 국제선 운항 횟수가 642% 더 늘었다. 항공기는 지구 온난화 주범 이산화탄소 배출의 일등공신이다.
여름철 가정·회사·모든 운송 수단에서 사용되는 에어컨 냉매도 지구를 더 뜨겁게 하는데 큰 역할을 한다. 그런데 여행과 에어컨은 포기하기 힘들다. 이 같은 사실을 알고 있는 필자도 무더운 여름을 견디지 못해 지금 에어컨을 켜고 글을 쓰고 있다. 나부터 실천이 안 된다.
이처럼 앞으로 세상은 이러한 이유 들로 더 뜨거워지는 불지옥이 될 확률이 높다. 불지옥은 종말의 시대 심판 용어로만 쓰이는 게 아니라, 우리 일상이 불지옥이 될 수 있다는 것이다. 지구촌 여름 낮 최고 온도가 40도를 넘어 50도를 향해 달려가고 있는데 10~20년 후 이것이 60도 70도까지 오르지 말라는 법은 없다.
극단적 예를 들어 만약, 지구 온도가 어느 순간 100도가 된다면 지구상의 모든 것은 펄펄 끓기 시작한다. 그야말로 지구 전체가 불지옥이 되는 것이다.
단순히 뜨겁다고 해서 문제가 아니다. 지구가 뜨거워지니 대기 중 수증기량이 급증해 태풍, 장마, 기습폭우, 우박 등 변칙성 기상이변이 속출한다.
지금까지는 태풍이 한 개씩, 두 개씩 시차를 두고 생겨났지만, 영화 투모로우(2004년)처럼 태풍과 허리케인 4~6개 동시에 발생할 수 있다는 전망이 있다. 태풍의 규모는 점점 커지고 야구·테니스공만 했던 우박이 손바닥 크기를 넘어선 지 오래전이다.
보통 4~5일 연속 내리고 소강상태를 보였던 장맛비가 일주일, 보름, 한 달 내내 지속될 수도 있다. 지구 전체를 물바다로 만들었던 노아의 방주 시대 때처럼 40일 주야(晝夜)로 비가 내리지 말라는 법은 없다.
지구는 이미 고장이 났다. 회복 불능이다. 그동안 지구는 인간에게 끊임없이 경고를 해왔는데 인간은 귓등으로도 듣지 않아 이 지경을 만들었다. 언론은 지구의 역습이라고 표현하지만 엄밀히 말해 지구의 역습이 아닌 지구의 정공법 복수다.
그렇다면 어찌해야 할까.
이렇다 할 방법은 없어 보인다. 각 나라 정상이 아무리 UN에 모여 이산화탄소·메탄 배출을 줄이자고 머리를 쥐어짜고 나름, 규제를 만들어 억제하고 있지만 최근 이산화탄소·메탄양은 오히려 더 늘고 있다.
미국 국립해양대기청(NOAA)은 지난 4월 온실가스 관련 발표 자료에서 “2022년 이산화탄소 농도가 전년보다 2.13ppm 증가한 417.06ppm을 기록해 산업화 이전보다 50% 더 높은 수준이 됐다”고 밝혔다. 이는 지구 대기의 평균 이산화탄소 농도가 11년 연속 2ppm 이상의 높은 증가율을 기록한 것이다.
메탄양도 마찬가지다. 국제에너지기구(IEA)의 올 2월 발표 자료에 따르면 지난해 전 세계 에너지 부문에서 배출된 메탄의 양은 1억3330만톤으로 2021년보다 1.8% 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 즉 지구 기온 상승을 근본적으로 막기는 더는 불가능하다는 뜻이다.
어쩌면 인류의 마지막 희망은 종말 전까지, 지구가 아닌 화성과 달나라 이주·개척일 수 있다. 미국·유럽·중국·인도·일본 등이 우주개발에 나라의 온 역량을 집중하는 이유다.
그런데, 한국은 우주항공청 설립조차 정치권에 발목이 잡혀 있다. 우주선, 누리호 발사, 달 탐사, 화성 이주 등은 과학계의 꿈만이 아니라 국민의 생존권이 달린 시급한 문제이다.

It is said that evolution itself is not possible. The entire country has become a red fire pit, and the sky is reminiscent of a fire hell.
Greece is not the only country. Nearby Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese terrestrial paradise all do. The daytime high is rising and falling above 40 degrees Celsius, and forest fires are added to it, so to make matters worse, it is literally not a place for people to live.
This is also happening in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. For several months, the area of forest fire damage in Canada was 8.8 million( (88,000)), more than 80% of Korea's area (100,000)). For this reason, Canada's economic growth rate in the third quarter of this year is expected to slow down by up to 0.6%p.
Experts warn that this will become commonplace in humans in the future. They worry that the age of global warming is over and that it is now the age of global tropicalization.
The biggest reason for the era of tropicalization is that China and the U.S., which rank first and second in carbon and methane emissions, the third-largest EU, fourth-largest India, and fifth-largest Russia are taking some action. These countries are looking at their own economic growth and companies.
Global temperatures once fell as the number of flights decreased due to a sharp drop in travel demand due to COVID-19 over the past three years, and when the COVID-19 emergency ended, the number of flights soared more than before as retaliatory travel demand exploded in these top five countries. In Korea alone, the number of international flights increased 642% this year from last year. Aircraft are the leading contributor to carbon dioxide emissions, the main culprit of global warming.
Air conditioning refrigerants used in homes, companies, and all means of transportation in summer also play a major role in making the Earth hotter. But traveling and air conditioning are hard to give up. Knowing this fact, I couldn't stand the hot summer and now I'm writing with the air conditioner on. I can't put it into practice first.
As such, the world is likely to become a hell of fire that gets hotter for these reasons in the future. Fire hell is not only used as a referee term in the era of the end, but our daily lives can be fire hell. The highest temperature in the summer day of the global village is running above 40 degrees and toward 50 degrees, and there is no law that it should not rise to 60 degrees and 70 degrees in 10 to 20 years.
For example, if the Earth's temperature reaches 100 degrees at some point, everything on Earth starts to boil. The whole earth is truly a hell of a hell of a lot.
It doesn't matter simply because it's hot. As the Earth heats up, the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere increases rapidly, resulting in a series of anomalous weather events such as typhoons, rainy seasons, sudden rainstorms, and hail.
So far, typhoons have been created one by one and two by two, but there is a prospect that four to six typhoons and hurricanes can occur at the same time, as in the movie Tomorrow (2004). The scale of the typhoon is getting bigger and it has been a long time since hail, which used to be only baseball and tennis balls, exceeded the size of a palm.
The monsoon rains, which usually fell for four to five consecutive days and were in a lull, may last for a week, 15 days, or a month. There is no law against rain on the 40th day and night as in the era of Noah's ark, which turned the entire earth into a sea of water.
The earth has already broken down. be beyond recovery. In the meantime, the Earth has constantly warned humans, but humans have made this situation because they do not listen to it. The media describes it as a counterattack of the earth, but technically, it is not a counterattack of the earth, but a revenge of the earth's law.
Then what should we do.
There seems to be no other way. Although the leaders of each country gather at the United Nations to reduce carbon dioxide and methane emissions and make their own regulations to curb them, the amount of carbon dioxide and methane has been increasing recently.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said in a release on greenhouse gases in April, "carbon dioxide concentration in 2022 increased 2.13 ppm from the previous year to 417.06 ppm, 50% higher than before industrialization." This is the 11th consecutive year that the average concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere has increased by more than 2 ppm.
The same is true of methane. According to data released in February this year by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the amount of methane emitted from the global energy sector last year was 133.3 million tons, up 1.8% from 2021. In other words, it is no longer possible to fundamentally prevent the rise in global temperatures.
Perhaps humanity's last hope is to migrate and explore Mars and the moon, not Earth, until the end. This is why the U.S., Europe, China, India, and Japan are focusing their entire capabilities on space development.
However, even the establishment of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Korea is hampered by politics. Spacecraft, Nuri launch, lunar exploration, and migration to Mars are not only the dreams of the scientific community, but also urgent issues with the people's right to live.
