[이슈밸리=윤대우 편집장] 최근 미국 중동부에 있는 캔터키 윌모아 애즈베리대학교(Asbury University)에서 큰 부흥이 일어나고 있다. 지난 2월 8일 이 대학에서 시작된 예배는 약 한달 가까이 중단 없이 이어지고 있다.
이런 소식은 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)와 지역 언론 등을 통해 급속도로 퍼졌고 미국 주요 언론인 CNN, 뉴욕타임스, 폭스뉴스 등이 이 대학의 ‘회개 대각성 부흥회’를 집중 조명했다.
CNN은 지난 18일 “애즈베리 부흥(Asbury Revival)이라고 불리는 이 운동은 전국에서 사람들이 몰려와 찬양과 기도, 토론에 참여할 기회를 잡기 위해 대학의 메인 예배당 밖에 줄을 섰다”고 보도했다. 부흥(Reviva)l의 국어사전 의미는 “쇠퇴하였던 것이 다시 일어남”이다.
교회를 안 나가고, 예수를 잘 모르는 이들은, ‘정신 나간 사람들의 집회’, ‘미친 사람들의 모임’이라며 조롱하겠지만, 회개 대각성 부흥회 특징은, 자기의 잘못을 고백한 후, 마약을 끊고, 술과 음란, 도박을 중단하고, 폭력을 멈추고, 이혼하려 했던 가정이 하나가 되고, 부모와 자녀 간의 관계가 회복된다는 점이다.
전 세계 모든 정부의 당면 과제가 마약, 도박, 이혼, 폭력, 세대 갈등이고, 이를 해결하려 해마다 수백, 수천억의 예산을 들이고 있다. 따라서 국가의 근본 문제가 해결될 수만 있다면, 이번 애즈베리 부흥회에 한 번쯤 관심을 가져볼 필요가 있다.
우리나라에도 이러한 회개 부흥 운동이 일어나 출산율이 오르고 이혼율이 낮아지고 자살률이 급감해 인구절벽 문제가 해결된다면, 아울러 실업률이 줄고, 경제성장률이 오른다면 윤석열 정부의 국가 운영에 큰 도움이 될 것이다. 부흥의 핵심은 비정상의 정상화다.
애즈베리 성령 대각성 부흥 운동은 지금으로부터 116년 전, 1907년 평양 장대현 교회 대부흥과 결을 같이한다. 미국 선교사들의 회개로 시작된 장대현 교회 성령부흥회에는 당시 양반 평민 가릴 것 없이 너도나도, 교회 단상 앞에 나와 자신의 잘못을 회개하고 토로했다. 도박, 폭력, 간음, 심지어 살인 등 죄들의 회개가 쏟아졌다.
부흥 특징은 먼저 회개가 일어난다는 점이다. 점잖고 권세 있어 보이던 미국 선교사들, 양반들이 자신의 치부를 드러내며, 잘못을 구하니, 평양 장대현 교회는 매일같이 눈물 콧물 쏟아내며 울음바다가 됐다.
이런 소문은 곧 전국 팔도로 퍼져 나갔고, 많은 사람이 평양으로 몰려들었다. 100여 년 전 평양은 지금과 달리 동방의 예루살렘이었고 한국 개신교 부흥의 시작 지점이었다.
그런데 여기서 짚고 넘어가야 할 것은 앞서 미국 선교사들이 태평양을 건너 보름 남짓한 거리의 조선에 온 이유 인데, 이는 그들 스스로 먼저 부흥을 경험했기 때문이다.
지금 부흥의 역사가 일어나고 있는 켄터키주는 1797년 회개 부흥 운동이 일어났던 곳이다.
스코틀랜드계 장로교 목사 매그리디의 도전적 설교를 듣고 불량배들이 모여 살던 동네에서 큰 회개와 부흥 운동이 일어났다. 1801년 켄터키주 동북부 케인릿지 대부흥에는 한 주 동안 2만명이 집회 참석했다. 교통이 불편했던 당시로선 상상하기 어려운 인파였다. 켄터키주 부흥은 인근 테네시주, 서부 케롤라이나, 조지아주 및 오하이우 주로 계속 번져나갔다. 부흥의 특징은 전파된다는 점이다.
이 성령 부흥 운동으로 장로교, 감리교, 침례교 목사들이 부흥 집회 참여하면서 해외 선교를 결심하게 되고 이들은 1800년대 후반 프리스턴, 하버드, 예일대 등 미국 최고 엘리트 출신 선교사들과 함께 조선 땅을 밟게 된다.
제정신이거나 합리적 사고를 한다면 가능한 일이겠나. 그런데 이렇게 조선에 도착한 미국 선교사들은 이 나라에 병원과 학교를 먼저 세우기 시작했다.
흑암의 땅 조선에 1885년부터 1910년 일제강점기 직전까지 선교사에 의해 설립된 학교는 600여곳 이상이다. 배재학당, 연세대, 이화여대, 숭실대는 이렇게 탄생했다. 애즈베리 부흥을 주목하는 이유다. 부흥은 가난과 질병, 무지의 해방을 의미한다.
저출산, 저성장, 다양한 갈등에 함몰된 대한민국은 진정한 부흥이 절실하다. 애즈베리 부흥의 물결이 한반도로 넘어오길 기도하는 이유다.
만약, 이 땅의 대통령, 정치인, 위정자들이 먼저 회개하고 “모든 게 내 탓이오”라고 회개 운동을 전개한다면, 이 나라에도 애즈베리 이상의 놀라운 부흥의 역사가 임할 것이다. 이 나라는 이미 1907년, 1974년, 2000년 큰 부흥을 경험했다. 부흥은 멀리 있는 게 아니라, 바로 우리 곁에 있다. 봄이 왔다. 모두 부흥했으면 한다.

The challenges of all governments around the world are drugs, gambling, divorce, violence, and generational conflict, and hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars are spent every year to solve them. Therefore, if the fundamental problems of the country can be solved, it is necessary to pay attention to this Asbury Revival at least once.
If the population cliff problem is solved by a sharp drop in the fertility rate, divorce rate, and suicide rate, and unemployment rate and economic growth rate rise, it will be of great help to the Yoon Suk Yeoln government's national operation. The key to revival is normalization of abnormalities.
The Asbury Holy Spirit's Great Revival Movement coincided with the Great Revival of the Jangdaehyeon Church in Pyongyang in 1907, 116 years ago. At the Holy Spirit Revival of Jang Dae-hyun Church, which began with repentance by American missionaries, everyone, regardless of the common people of the yangban at the time, came out in front of the church podium to repent and express their mistakes. Repentance of crimes such as gambling, violence, adultery, and even murder was poured out.
The characteristic of revival is that repentance occurs first. As the American missionaries and aristocrats, who seemed decent and powerful, revealed their wealth and sought fault, the Jangdaehyeon Church in Pyongyang shed tears and runny nose every day and became a sea of tears.
These rumors soon spread across the country, and many people flocked to Pyongyang. More than 100 years ago, Pyongyang was Jerusalem in the East and the starting point of the revival of Korean Protestantism.
However, what should be pointed out here is the reason why American missionaries crossed the Pacific Ocean and came to Joseon about 15 days away, because they experienced revival first on their own.
Kentucky, where the history of revival is now taking place, is where the repentance revival movement took place in 1797.
After listening to the challenging sermon of Scottish Presbyterian minister Magridi, a great repentance and revival movement took place in the neighborhood where the bullies lived. In 1801, 20,000 people attended the rally in the Great Recreation of Kane Ridge in northeastern Kentucky. It was an unimaginable crowd at the time when traffic was inconvenient. The Kentucky Revival continued to spread to neighboring Tennessee, West Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio. The characteristic of revival is its propagation.
Presbyterians, Methodists, and Baptist ministers participated in the revival rally and decided to do overseas missions in the late 1800s, along with missionaries from the top elite in the United States, including Prieston, Harvard, and Yale.
Is it possible if you are sane or reasonable thinking. However, American missionaries who arrived in Joseon began to set up hospitals and schools in the country first.
There are more than 600 schools established by missionaries in Joseon, the land of black rock, from 1885 to just before Japanese colonial era in 1910. Baejae Hakdang, Yonsei University, Ewha Womans University, and Soongsil University were born like this. This is why we are paying attention to the revival of Asbury. Revival means the liberation of poverty, disease, and ignorance.
South Korea, depressed by low birth rates, low growth, and various conflicts, desperately needs a real revival. This is why we pray that the wave of Asbury revival will come to the Korean Peninsula.
If the country's presidents, politicians, and rulers repent first and launch a repentance campaign, "It's all my fault," there will be a history of more than Asbury's remarkable revival. The country has already experienced a major revival in 1907, 1974, and 2000. Revival is not far away, it is right next to us. Spring has come. I hope everyone will recover.
