[이슈밸리=사설] 윤석열 전 검찰총장에 대한 관심이 뜨겁다. 대권 주자 최대어 윤 전 총장이 등장하는 길목마다 지지자들과 기자들이 인산인해를 이룬다.
3개월 만에 잠행을 깬 윤석열 전 검찰총장은 9일 서울 중구 남산예장공원에서 열린 우당 이회영 기념관 개관식에 참석했다.
윤 전 총장은 기자들에게 “국민의 기대와 염려를 제가 다 경청하고 알고 있다. 지켜봐주기를 부탁드린다"라고 말했다.
또 윤 전 총장은 국민의힘 입당 계획에 대한 기자들 질문에 "제가 아직 오늘 처음으로 나타났는데 제가 걸어가는 길을 보시면 잘 아시게 되지 않겠나 생각한다"라고 즉답을 피했다.
윤 전 총장은 '장모가 10원 한 장 남에게 피해준 것이 없다'는 발언, 향후 정치 일정, 김종인 전 국민의힘 비상대책위원장과의 관계 등에 대한 질문에는 답하지 않았다.
정치를 경험한 적 없는 윤 총장이지만, 그의 행보를 보면 정치 5단쯤 되는 느낌을 받는다. 그가 이날 한 말 가운데 ”국민의 기대와 염려“라는 단어에서 자신은 항상 국가를 생각하는 통큰 리더란 인상을 심어줬고,
”다 경청하고 알고 있다“란 말은 국민의 필요를 항상 체크하고 있다는 포용적 이미지를 불어 넣었다.
”지켜봐 주시기를 부탁드린다“라는 표현으로 윤 전 총장에 대한 궁금증과 간절함을 더 증폭시켰다. 짧은 한마디 문장이었지만 다분히 준비된 워딩(자기의 생각이나 주장을 효과적으로 전달하기 위해 쓰는 구체적인 언어 표현)이라 할 수 있다.
복잡한 외부 공개 행사에서 기자들과 질의응답을 할 수 없고, 국민의 기대와 관심을 저버리지 않을 테니 잠시 기다려 달라며 통 큰 리더 모습을 강조했다.
윤 전 총장은 국민의힘 입당 관련해 ”제가 걸어가는 길을 보시면 잘 아시게 되지 않겠나“라는 말을 하며, 현 정권과 싸운 인물로 법과 원칙에 충실한 보수정권 이미지와 어울린다는 것을 부각했다. 즉 국민의힘 입당을 사실상 공식화 한 셈이다.
그의 국민의힘 입당 시점에 대한 해석은 제각각이지만, 새 당 대표 체제 출범 후 어느 정도 당이 정리된 이후가 될 것이란 전망이 나온다. 특히 새 당 대표로 유력한 이준석 후보가 토론회 과정 가운데 윤 전 총장에 대해 여러 차례 부정적 표현을 한 점 때문에 윤 총장이 애초 계획보다 국민의힘 입당 타이밍 연기할 것이란 관측이 나온다.
윤 전 총장 본인에게 청와대 가는 길이 무난하면 좋겠지만 두 가지 문제가 우려된다. 첫째는 윤 총장은 ‘장모’ 등 가족 문제에 지나치게 민감하게 반응한다는 점이다. 윤 전 총장이 최근 장모 관련 ‘10원 한 장 남에게 피해 준 적 없다”는 말은, 너무 나갔다는 지적이 많다.
윤 전 총장이 주변 수사 네트워크를 총 동원해 장모 관련 의혹을 조사를 완벽히 했더라도 신이 아닌 이상 세상만사 인간은 모든 것이 완벽할 수 없다. 윤 전 총장의 호언장담이 스스로 발목을 잡을 수 있다는 것이다.
윤 전 총장이 대통령이 되려 한다면 가족 문제에 대해선 인정할 것은 인정하거나 말을 조심히 내뱉어야 한다. 이번 일로 윤 전 총장은 가족 관련 작은 일에 쉽게 흥분한다는 인상을 다분히 심어줬다. 이 경우 여권의 공격 타켓은 계속 윤 전 총장의 가족 문제를 건드릴 확률이 커진다.
또 한 가지는 윤 총장이 본선 무대에서 상대와 논리 싸움에서 얼마나 잘 할 수 있느냐다. 대권 주자 가운데는 말 잘하는 정치인은 수두룩하다. 평생 검찰수사로 먹고 살아온 윤 전 총장과 말로 먹고 살아온 정치인들은 게임이 안 될 수 있다, 설령 논리는 완벽하더라도 그것을 어떻게 조리 있게 말로 잘 푸느냐도 윤 전 총장의 숙제가 될 것 같다. 국회 청문회와 대검찰청 앞에서 짧게 몇 마디 한 것만 본 국민으로선 윤 전 총장의 토론 실력이 궁금할 뿐이다.
어느 나라든 대통령으로 가는 길은 어려운 길이다. 철저히 준비하지 않으면 본선 문턱을 넘지 못할 수도 있다.
