[이슈밸리=박지영 기자] 세계 최고 게임사로 도약하고 있는 엔씨소프트(이하 엔씨(NC))가 차세대 게임 플랫폼 ‘퍼플(PURPLE)’을 통해 디바이스, 플랫폼 경계 허물기에 본격 나선다.
퍼플은 모바일 게임을 PC에서 즐길 수 있는 플랫폼이다. 이용자들은 모바일에서 게임을 하다가 집에 들어오면 PC로 넘어와서 게임을 이어갈 수 있다. 연내 출시 예정인 모바일 대작 ‘리니지2M’이 첫 적용 대상이다. 리니지2M은 4K UHD급 해상도의 풀 3D 그래픽으로 출시 예정이다. 퍼플을 이용하면 큰 PC 화면에서 리니지2M을 생생하게 즐길 수 있다.

퍼플은 모바일 게임을 PC로 즐기는 것 외에도 음성 소통, 라이브 스트리밍, 대규모 채팅 등 다양한 커뮤니티 기능을 지원한다. 퍼플의 라이브 스트리밍 기능을 활용하면 별도의 프로그램 설치 없이 자신이 플레이하는 화면을 실시간으로 공유할 수 있다. 다른 이용자의 스트리밍 영상을 시청하다 파티원으로 전투에 합류하는 등 기존 MMORPG와는 차별화된 경험을 제공한다.
‘게임 연동 채팅’ 기능을 활용하면 게임을 하지 않고 있어도 게임 중인 이용자들과 실시간으로 게임 상황을 공유할 수 있다. 채팅은 최대 10만명이 참여할 수 있어 대규모 혈맹 전투나 공선전에서 활용도가 높다. 이용자 편의를 위한 음성 소통은 물론 게임 속 다양한 일정관리가 가능한 스케줄 기능도 갖췄다.
엔씨(NC)는 퍼플에 앞서, 지난 3월 PC게임을 모바일로 플레이할 수 있는 ‘예티(Yeti)’ 서비스를 선보인 바 있다. 현재 자사의 PC 온라인게임 ‘리니지 리마스터’와 ‘리니지2’를 ‘예티’에 적용해 서비스 중이다. 국내 게임업체 중 PC와 모바일 모두 호환 가능한 플랫폼을 갖춘 곳은 엔씨소프트가 유일하다.
예티는 스트리밍 서비스 개념으로 PC로 게임을 접속한 상태에서 모바일로도 크로스 플레이가 가능하다. 모바일로 단순 자동사냥 확인만이 아닌, 원격으로 PC에서 조작하는 것처럼 다양한 기능을 이용할 수 있다. 잠시 자리를 비우거나 외출할 때에도 게임을 조작을 할 수 있다. 이용자들로 하여금 PC 온라인게임의 공간적 한계를 뛰어넘었다는 평가를 받고 있다.
예티와 퍼플을 통해 서비스되는 게임이 확대되면 엔씨(NC)가 지속적으로 노력해왔던 ‘플랫폼 경계 허물기’가 가속화 될 것이라는 전망이다. 엔씨(NC)는 올 하반기 출시될 리니지2M을 시작으로 다른 모바일 IP의 퍼플 서비스 적용을 점차 늘려나갈 계획이다.
김택헌 엔씨소프트 최고퍼블리싱책임자(CPO)는 퍼플에 대해 "경계를 이어주고 한계를 뛰어넘는 새로운 게임 플랫폼"이라고 소개하며 "게임 경험의 무한한 확장을 가져올 것"이라고 자신했다.
한편 엔씨소프트는 리니지2M을 4분기 출시할 예정이다. 리니지2M에 대한 시장의 기대감은 그 어느 때보다 높다. 사전예약은 18시간 만에 사전 예약 200만, 5일만에 300만 사전예약을 달성해 하반기 최고 기대작임을 입증했다. 이는 역대 게임 중 최단 기록으로 14일 만에 사전 예약자 300만을 달성한 리니지M의 기록을 크게 단축했다.

Purple is a platform where you can enjoy mobile games on your PC. Users can play games on their mobile devices and then move on to their PCs. Lineage 2M, which is expected to be released by end of this year, is the first application of Lineage 2M. Lineage 2M will be released in full 3D graphics with 4K UHD resolution. The features of Purple include a community system that is optimized for graphics quality and performance in PC environments, combined with live streaming and ▲Ensoft mobile game optimization and strong security services.
Besides enjoying mobile games on PCs, Purple also supports various community functions such as voice communication, live streaming and large-scale chatting. Using the Purple's live streaming feature, users can share the screen they play in real time without installing a separate program. It provides a differentiated experience from previous MMORPGs by joining the battle as a party member while watching streaming videos of other users.
Using the "game-linked chat" function, users who are not playing games can share the game situation in real time with users who are playing games even though they are not playing. Because up to 100,000 people can participate in chatting, it is highly utilized in large-scale blood alliance battles or public campaigns. Not only is it able to communicate with users for convenience, it also has a schedule function that allows them to manage various schedules in games.
Prior to the Purple, NC introduced a "Yeti" service in March that allows PC games to be played on mobile. Currently, its PC online games "Lineage Limaster" and "Lineage 2" are applied to "Yetty." NCsoft is the only Korean game company with a platform that is compatible with both PCs and mobile devices.
Yeti is also able to cross-play on mobile while accessing games via PC through streaming service concept. Instead of simply checking automatic hunting with mobile devices, users can use a variety of functions such as remotely manipulating them on a PC. You can manipulate the game even when you are away for a while or when you go out. Users are said to have surpassed the spatial limits of PC online games.
It is predicted that if games that are provided through Yeti and Purple are expanded, NC (NC)'s continuous efforts to break down platform boundaries will accelerate. Starting with Lineage 2M, which will be released in second half of this year, NC (NC) is planning to gradually increase application of other mobile IP's purple service.
NC Soft Chief Publishing Officer Kim Taek-hun introduced Purple as a new game platform that connects the boundaries and goes beyond the limits, expressing confidence that it will bring about an infinite expansion of the game experience.
Meanwhile, NCsoft is scheduled to release Lineage 2M in the fourth quarter. Market expectations for Lineage 2M are higher than ever. Pre-bookings have achieved 2 million pre-bookings in 18 hours and 3 million pre-bookings in 5 days, proving that this is the best second half of this year. This is the shortest game in history and Lineage M's record of 3 million pre-orders in 14 days.
